History Archeological evidence suggests that the Moab area and surrounding country was inhabited by a tribe of ancient Indians, the Ancestral Puebloans Anasazi , perhaps as early as 10, years ago.
The present town of Moab sits on the ruins of pueblo farming communities dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The Indians left in the middle of the 13th century for unknown reasons. Nomadic Ute tribes greeted the first Europeans to arrive in the Canyonlands area. Settlement In Mormon missionaries attempted to settle the area and established the Elk Mountain Mission but a Ute Indian attack forced the mission to close after only 3 months.
For the next 3 decades the future site of Moab was used intermittently by trappers, prospectors, and cattleman. Permanent settlement was not achieved until the s. The first people to settle in the fertile Spanish Valley, named after the “Old Spanish Trail,” which ran through it, were the Mormon pioneers in These early settlers, coming in from the north, encountered the deep canyon walls of the Grand River officially renamed the Colorado River in May, and were unable to take wagons over, or around, the steep canyon walls.
They unloaded their supplies, took their wagons apart, and lowered them by rope over the ledge 1 piece at a time.

In a single week, I was taken out for sushi and served a home-cooked dinner. To a Bozeman girl accustomed to PBR-themed dates at local dives, two nice meals in one week was a big deal. To Al, a man about town, that was an unacceptable answer. I explained that he was new to town, right out of law school… and that he was nice. In Bozeman, dropping in—the act of skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, and partaking in other gravity-assisted activities—consumes a great deal of our time and is one of the best ways to really get to know someone.

New geologic research into the history of the landscape near Moab has yielded a much better understanding of how it has changed in the recent geologic past and how it continues to evolve. Geologists have long understood that the canyons, cliffs, pinnacles and other geologic features found near Moab are young, but until recently they have struggled to quantify the age of this landscape.
The Masters of Science thesis completed in by Utah State University student James Mauch has significantly furthered our understanding of the origin and evolution of the canyon country surrounding Moab. Mauch and other geomorphologists geologists who study how landscapes form pay special attention to stream deposits because running water is one of the most important sculptors of landforms.
Streams leave gravel deposits in floodplains when they are in equilibrium with the land and not actively downcutting. When geologists are able to determine when these deposits formed, they can obtain important time markers to constrain the age of a landscape.

Geology forces those who practice the science to develop a long view. Geologic time spans intervals entirely different than our human one of days, weeks, months, and years. The events that make up the geologic history of Moab took place over intervals of tens of millions of years, occurring as long ago as hundreds of millions of years in the past. Developing a perspective on geologic time is one of the greatest intellectual challenges among all the sciences, right with understanding the vast distances found in interstellar space and the strange behaviors seen in particle physics.
This is a remarkable statement in light of what the science of geology has given us; ranging from everything from oil, gas, gold, and silver to concrete and clay. Further, the geosciences have fired our collective imaginations and enriched our intellectual lives with the discovery and description of prehistoric faunas such as the dinosaurs and trilobites, as well as by measuring that that the very continents that we inhabit are slowly moving relative to each other at the rates that fingernails grow.
