University of Exeter Chief Information and Digital Officer, Alan Hill, is refocusing the Russell Group institution’s strategy from a systems to a services approach in order to “accelerate its digital journey”. Joining the University of Exeter in early from a stint at the Ministry of Defence where he was the department’s Head of Operate and Defend, Hill has instilled an ethos of ‘Design, Develop and Operate’ in his function.
He is now prioritising digital transformation initiatives which will add value to the university in education, its research IT capabilities and improve the student experience – while preparing Exeter for the opportunities and challenges of the future. Get the pick of the week’s stories and fascinating Devon history features direct to your inbox every Saturday morning in our exclusive Weekend Report newsletter. What female students worry about when it comes to sex and dating is very different from what men worry about – according to a major new survey.
Dating and sex habits are also vastly different, and the survey has revealed how people go about hooking up and where they get their best sex advice. When it comes to priorities in their lives, male students ranked dating and sex higher than female students did, who instead choose to prioritise family and their education. Top worries in relation to dating were eye opening; men said they were most concerned about finding their ideal match and remaining faithful to their partner, whereas women worry most about being cheated on.
Students were then asked what their biggest worries in relation to sex were, with the following found to be the most common causes for concern:. Female respondents are the most concerned about getting pregnant and looking attractive to their partner, whereas male students are far more worried about their sexual performance and being caught in the act. Asked to state where they turn to if or when they have questions about sex, the following were the most popular sources:.
It’s important for us to understand not just the behavioural trends around this hot topic, but also the attitudes motivating a generation of students growing up in the social media age. While female students are worried about their body image and the risk of being cheated on, males worry more about their sexual performance or being caught in the act.

Pottery is one of the most commonly recovered artefacts from archaeological sites. Despite more than a century of relative dating based on typology and seriation 1 , accurate dating of pottery using the radiocarbon dating method has proven extremely challenging owing to the limited survival of organic temper and unreliability of visible residues Here we report a method to directly date archaeological pottery based on accelerator mass spectrometry analysis of 14 C in absorbed food residues using palmitic C and stearic C fatty acids purified by preparative gas chromatography We present accurate compound-specific radiocarbon determinations of lipids extracted from pottery vessels, which were rigorously evaluated by comparison with dendrochronological dates 9,10 and inclusion in site and regional chronologies that contained previously determined radiocarbon dates on other materials Notably, the compound-specific dates from each of the C and C fatty acids in pottery vessels provide an internal quality control of the results 6 and are entirely compatible with dates for other commonly dated materials.
Accurate radiocarbon dating of pottery vessels can reveal: 1 the period of use of pottery; 2 the antiquity of organic residues, including when specific foodstuffs were exploited; 3 the chronology of sites in the absence of traditionally datable materials; and 4 direct verification of pottery typochronologies.
Here we used the method to date the exploitation of dairy and carcass products in Neolithic vessels from Britain, Anatolia, central and western Europe, and Saharan Africa. Abstract Pottery is one of the most commonly recovered artefacts from archaeological sites.
